DIY: Coffee mug mustaches

I'm sharing a project guys! Aren't you proud of me? I've been wanting to get in on the Pinterest Challenges that are popping up for their summer series, and now I have something to share. I actually did this project a little while ago (so I might be cheating just a wee big), but I haven't shared, so it counts!!

The idea of creating your own personal ceramic pieces have been popping up all over pinterest for a while now. I didn't go the super easy route and just try the method of baking sharpie onto a ceramic piece (although, I do hear that it works). I made these for a gift for my 16 year old niece, so I wanted to give her something that would last.  I used a paint pen specifically made for making permenat decorations on ceramics.

The process and time commitment of this project is minimal. I sketched out a rough outline of a mustache on a piece of scrap paper to use as a visual guide.

Then I just started free hand-ing the image onto my mugs.

And in just about ten minutes, I had both of them done. I loved the minimalistic look of just the outlines. It was suble and a little sly I thought.

In the end, I actually ended up coloring in the mug on the left. When I went to wrap up the mugs, those little feather-lines bugged me just enough to make me want to change it. Sadly, I completely forgot to photograph the different. It became a mismatch pair that way, but still totally worked.

This is the pen that I used for this project. I just followed instrcutions and baked the mugs in the oven as directed.

What do you think? Have you gotten on this bandwagon yet? I think this is an easy way to create custom, personalized gifts. So now everyone go run out to the thrift store, pick up some ceramic pieces and get a doodling! Let me know if anyone tries the strait up sharpie method.

Psst: Katie and Sherry run the Pinterest Challenge seasonally, so be on the lookout for the next round in the Fall.

  3. Haven't tried it yet, but am definitely considering it for Christmas gifts this year. Perhaps a personalized mug with some tea/coffee/cocoa included?
